Festival of Dance - 22nd May 2010

Born in Tehran to Turkish parents, Nancy Bakhshy grew up steeped in the traditions of the Turkish and Persian cultures. At her mother's dance and aerobics studio she was schooled in Turkish and Persian dancing styles along with Raqs Sharqi by Egyptian teacher Jamila.
In Malaysia, Nancy is a true pioneer of this wonderful art form. She was the first teacher to teach belly dance in November 2002. Her program was met with much enthusiasm as women flocked to this new dance sensation. Soon she found herself in high demand in the fledgling K.L. belly dance community.

A professional Flamenco dancer Kayla choreographs, teaches and performs.
Around 25 years ago Kayla discovered the raw earthliness of gypsy Flamenco and has never looked back. She studied Flamenco with many teachers in Melbourne and participated in workshops conducted by guest artists from Spain. One instructor in particular, Conchita became her mentor. Conchita, an Andalusian gypsy, was raised in Cordoba; she migrated to Australia and began teaching flamenco some 40 years ago.
Kayla has performed in many restaurants, festivals and functions, she currently studies with Maestro Antonio Vargas (of Strictly Ballroom fame) whenever possible.
As a performer Kayla’s striking presence on stage along with her choreographic artistry is truly something to behold. Flamenco performed well is awe-inspiring. Kayla takes you on a journey of mesmerising rhythms, visual elegance and allows her audience to witness the depth of her character.
